Court won't declare chimp a person!

Comments

Perhaps these people could simply put their money where their mouth is, buy the chimp, and take care of it until it dies. I suppose that's too simple of a solution in Europe where the nanny states have convinced most people that the state needs to take care of every little problem.

You hit the nail on the head for sure. Cradle to Grave government. That's Hillary plan too.
The chimp requires $6800 per month in "upkeep?" Does it have a million dollar mortgage or something?
I'm not sure what this has to do with politics - it being more of an odd philosophical/legal argument... but I'll bite.

By way of explaning the $6800/month: I believe a professional has to take care of the chimpanzee. And they are probably basing upkeep costs on shelter costs. I'm sure they are trying to get as much as they can to care for the animal.

I wonder whether "personhood" would take the chimp out of the jurisdiction of Austria's animal protection laws.

And as far as taking a chimp as a pet. The thing would kill you. Are you kidding?
I read somewhere the costs were for specialized food and vet bills. The whole thing just seems like a stunt to me. Much like the great ape project in spain which is doing basically the same thing, trying to make chimps into humans.

Im curious as to why someone doesnt just buy the chimp also. Seems to me in the long run it would be cheaper then court battles.

Where is Bill Gates when you really need him?

Robin, I think you're right about come group just wanting to force the issue. From the groups' point of view if they could actually gain "person status" for Matthew then they'd be victorious.

Victorious at what I have no idea! But victorious nevertheless.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?

For some reason, I have a feeling that the animal is smarter than the humans trying to have it declared a human. Ugh.

Its people like these that make people who protect animals look bad.

Agreed... I was being Fascitious.
